Natural Lip Sunscreen Made at Home Easily

For many years, the benefits of safe sun exposure have been emphasized, with the keyword being “safe.” While sun exposure has numerous benefits, including the production of vitamin D and regulation of hormones, it’s also important to avoid sunburns, which can be damaging. In response to requests for a lip sunscreen with SPF, a homemade recipe has been developed.
Sunscreen is not always necessary, as the body needs sunlight to function properly. However, in sunny climates or during outdoor activities like surfing, sunscreen can be helpful. The key is to find a balance between sun exposure and protection.
Most store-bought lip sunscreens contain synthetic ingredients that can be toxic to coral reefs and harmful to humans. In contrast, the homemade lip sunscreen recipe uses non-nano and uncoated zinc oxide, which creates a skin barrier and reflects UV rays.
The recipe includes red raspberry seed oil, which has a slight SPF and is rich in antioxidants that protect the lips from sun damage. Shea butter is also added to nourish and firm up the lip balm, while beeswax provides a protective layer. Avocado oil makes up the bulk of the lip balm and supports collagen to prevent weakened skin cells.
The zinc oxide is used at a concentration of 20%, which translates to roughly 10 SPF. This may not seem like much, but it blocks about 90% of UV rays. To give the lip balm a bit of color, iron oxide and/or mica can be added. Iron oxides are nature-identical pigments that lend a rich, burgundy red color.

It’s essential to avoid using phototoxic essential oils in lip balms, as they can increase the risk of sunburn and skin damage.
The homemade lip sunscreen recipe is a safe and effective alternative to store-bought options. By using natural ingredients and avoiding toxic chemicals, individuals can protect their lips from UV damage while also promoting overall health and well-being.
To make the lip sunscreen, combine 1 and ½ tsp beeswax pellets, 1 TBSP shea butter, and 1 and ½ tsp avocado oil in a double boiler or glass bowl. Stir occasionally until melted, then add ½ tsp red raspberry seed oil and 10 drops essential oils (if using). Whisk in 2 tsp zinc oxide, ⅛ tsp iron oxide (if using), and ⅛ tsp mica powder (if using). Remove from heat and stir occasionally as it cools, then pour into containers.
