IFF introduces probiotic strain to boost metabolic health through gut-derived

IFF has launched GutABAlite, a probiotic ingredient featuring the clinically studied strain Levilactobacillus brevis LBR-6108. The formulation aims to enhance metabolic health by promoting gut-derived GABA production. According to the company, research connects this strain to reduced glucose exposure and improved insulin sensitivity.
Allyson Fish, senior vice president of IFF Health Sciences, highlighted that consumers increasingly prioritize practical methods to regulate blood sugar, energy levels, and digestion as part of daily wellness routines. GutABAlite is marketed as a gut-specific solution supported by human clinical trials, enabling brands to stand out in supplement and functional food markets.
The introduction of GutABAlite aligns with a broader industry focus on metabolic health, an expanding area within nutrition science. At SupplySide Global 2026, IFF will present the ingredient alongside other probiotic strains in its portfolio, including Howaru, emphasizing its potential metabolic benefits.
A referenced clinical trial, conducted as a randomized, double-blind study, showed that participants consuming GutABAlite for six weeks achieved lower daily glucose exposure. The trial also observed trends toward an 18% reduction in fasting insulin and a 20% decrease in HOMA-IR levels, a marker for insulin resistance. The strain further increased beneficial short-chain fatty acids in the gut. Effects reversed after supplementation ended, though IFF has not released publication details.
Mark Haupt, chief medical officer at IFF Health Sciences, called the results encouraging, stressing the direct relationship between gut activity and metabolic signaling. The findings suggest a gut-centered strategy could deliver significant metabolic health advantages, though the company notes further research is necessary.
Metabolic health has become a key focus in recent years, with competitors like Tate & Lyle and Designs for Health developing products targeting glucose control and insulin function. Separately, global health authorities have reclassified PCOS as PMOS to better capture its metabolic and endocrine characteristics, showing the condition’s broader systemic effects.
This week’s presentation at SupplySide Global 2026 will feature GutABAlite as part of IFF’s expanding probiotic lineup, reinforcing its commitment to metabolic wellness solutions. The company’s clinical claims, supported by the six-week trial, position it as a leader in gut-microbiome research for metabolic applications.
